So, Erich and I went on our yearly pilgrimage to the Philadelphia International Auto Show, and Elephant and Castle. A good time was had by all.

Here are the general thoughts that I had about the show as well as the various cars that we saw there:

* Most car companies decided that they wanted their steering wheels to look like they came from a Honda/Acura this year. Not sure why. Maybe Honda/Acura had a bunch of them left over and figured they would sell some off to recoup on any losses the prior year.

* There seemed to be less of a push on “eco friendly” cars this year. Don’t get me wrong, it was there. It was just less obnoxious as in prior years. Either that, or I’ve just learned to tune it out.

* I did love how the entire show was on a single floor this year. It was nice that everything was all together for a change rather then in 3 sections. The “DUB” cars were in a different section but they don’t count. Also, the free can of DUB Monster Energy Drink wasn’t as enormous as it usually was. Boo.

* Toyota had mostly hybrids this year. They even let you ride around in one on a test track if you wanted. This received a big “who cares” from me because I haven’t found any Toyotas interesting since they stopped manufacturing the Celica. This includes Scions which.. wow.. they are certainly giving Nissan a run for their money in the “Ugly” department.

* Speaking of Nissan, I got to sit in the Juke this year. It really impressed me that they managed to make the interior JUST AS UGLY as the exterior. Mad props, Nissan. The Cube was mysteriously absent from the show. No big loss there. The GT-R looks fierce, however.

* Chevy had some interesting cars this year. The Camaro was hard to see out of, as usual, even though they DID have a special Transformers edition of it. The Volt was super high tech-looking for a car that has lots of problems. The Sonic was actually pretty decent looking and sized. I’d probably even consider buying one if I were looking for a car like that.. and Erich and I were definitely NOT the target market for the Spark because we were lacking vaginas. Also, the Impala looks dated compared to everything else that they sell now. Nobody was even looking at them. They sort of look like a Lumina these days.

* Some decent Ford offerings. I liked the new Mustang Boss, The 2013 Fusion looks like an Aston-Martin which is pretty bad-ass.

* Cadillacs still look like they came from an 80s polygon game. I’m guessing they’re going for the whole “Stealth Fighter” thing. It doesn’t really work for them.

* Hyundais still look about the same as usual. We checked out the Tucson because we do every year since Mandy owns one. Looks a bit nicer inside. The instrument cluster is still ugly as fuck. Also, got a chance to sit in a Genesis Coupe. It’s one of the cars that I /so/ want to like but can’t get past the fact that it looks like a chopped down sedan and has no space in the back.

* MAZDA!! You let me down! Y U NO HAS RX-8?! I think they might have discontinued it for this model year, though. I has a sad about that. Also, Erich checked out the Mazda5 as a potential replacement for his current car. Not bad, actually. Comfy and lots of room. As long as it doesn’t drive like a turd, it’s in the running I would imagine.

* Volkswagen, no matter how hard you try and even if you DO create a squished-looking turbo Beetle to try to appeal to men, it will still be a chick car. I do totally dig the plaid seats in the GTI, though. It’s a shame that VW reliability sucks because I really would have considered buying one.

* Subaru had their new sports coupe on display. I’m really excited about this! I’d love to take one for a test drive some time to see how it runs. In a few years, it might make a great second car! Though I would buy the Toyota version because if it has a Subaru badge on it somewhere, most likely it’ll get hit on every side but the roof. It was cool that they also had some “retro” Subies there. They had an SVX and an XT Turbo on display. I’d always wanted an SVX and I owned an XT-6 for a while. Both really awesome cars.

*Also got to sit in the Volvo S60 R-Design. This car is the sex. It’s a shame that you can’t get it with a manual transmission.

* Speaking of manual transmissions, it’s cool to see that Buick is putting out a Regal with a manual transmission. It’s a shame that more non-foreign cars don’t do that. I know that I’d definitely consider getting a mid-size sedan with a manual transmission that has some power behind it. Also a shame that cars seem to be stripped of power because of emissions regulations. :s

* Sedan-wise, I still think that the Porsche Panamera is still the most awesome one on the road.

* Is the fact that I’m starting to like the looks of Mercedes-Benzes more and more mean that I’m getting old?

* I was hoping to see the prototype for the new NS-X at the show but I guess it was elsewhere. The TSX wagon is still a decent-looking car. I liked that and the smaller Audi wagons but neither of them come with a manual transmission.

* Chrysler Motors really “brought it” this year.

* The new Dart looks awesome, the Charger looks really cool in its “Super Bee” configuration and the Challenger SRT-8 is still one bad-ass vehicle. It was nice to see that they had a manual transmission version there this year that we could sit in. All the others were automatic. The pistol grip shifter is a cool touch. Definitely has the best visibility of the Challenger/Mustang/Camaro type cars.

* Jeeps are Jeeps. What can I say. They look a lot better interior-wise these days then in the last few years, however. I didn’t sit in one and think “was this designed for preschoolers to drive?”

* The Fiat 500 is actually surprisingly comfy for someone of my stature. If I were in college, it would be a car I’d consider buying. Also if I was gay, female, or forever alone.

* Chrysler.. meh. I mean I get it.. but meh. No more PT Cruiser so I guess that’s a positive thing.

* Some really cool classic cars on display. Favorite was definitely the Lotus Esprit Turbo from the James Bond films. I’ve always been a huge Esprit fan. The new one that is coming out this year (or next, I forget) looks awesome. I was hoping they’d have one on display but, alas, no.

* DUB floor is always sort of like.. “Why would you do that?” to me but hey, whatever floats your boat.

Overall, a great show. I think it was much better then last year. More interesting things then in the past few years. Glad that I went.

Oh.. and steak and chips? With newcastle? Total win.
